Welcome to the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC), where we embrace the transformative power of tourism as a catalyst for economic growth, social development, and global sustainability. The events of the past few years, particularly the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, have underscored the vital role tourism plays as a development toll and a mechanism for global sustainability. Tourism is a powerful force that transcends borders, fostering cultural exchange, creating job opportunities, and driving economic prosperity. However, this sector is not immune to challenges, as we have witnessed the vulnerability of tourism in the face of crises. Paradoxically, it is this vulnerability that fuels the sector’s resilience, inspiring us to build a world where tourism thrives even in the midst of challenges.
At the GTRCMC, we stand as a beacon of expertise and collaboration, dedicated to helping destinations prepare for, manage, and recover from crises. We work hand in hand with governments, civil society, businesses, international organizations, and academic institutions, recognizing that collective action is key to enhancing tourism resilience globally.
Our approach is comprehensive and multifaceted, encompassing six core pillars:
- Training and Capacity Building: Empowering stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate crises effectively.
- Research: Conducting cutting-edge research to inform strategies for building resilience in the face of various challenges.
- Advocacy: Serving as a voice for the importance of tourism resilience on the global stage, advocating for policies that support sustainable development.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Constantly assessing and reassessing the landscape to identify emerging threats and opportunities.
- Resource Mobilization: Facilitating the mobilization of resources to support initiatives that strengthen tourism resilience.
- Raising Awareness through Thought Leadership: Sharing insights, best practices, and innovative solutions to inspire a collective commitment to building a more resilient tourism sector.
Our focus areas include tourism climate resilience, tourism security/cybersecurity resilience, tourism pandemic resilience, tourism entrepreneurial resilience, and tourism digital resilience. With a proven track record of managing over 100 projects worldwide, we take pride in contributing to the resilience of destinations and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are sustained even in challenging times.
We invite you to join us on this journey towards a more resilient and sustainable future for global tourism. Together, we can build a world where the transformative power of tourism continues to be a force for positive change.
Sincerely,
Lloyd Waller, Professor of Digital Transformation Policy and Governance
